Reporting of Absences

Please remember to call our office at (805) 498-6102 to report your child's absence, or email kdavies@conejousd.org

If your child has a fever and any other flu such as cough, sore throat, body aches, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, please include this information in your message to the office. It is also important that lice be informed to us. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Tardiness

All students arriving after the last bell need to inform the office for a tardy note and will be counted for lunch counting in case it is purchased. This emphasizes the student's responsibility for procedure, promptness to school (reduction of unnecessary interruptions in the classroom), and assists kitchen staff in their meal preparation planning.

Please read the complete rule book for information about tardies and class absences. In case of consecutive absences, the homework may be requested on the second day of absence.

Appointments

You can help provide your child with a first-class education by scheduling all medical appointments and the dentist before or after school or during pupil-free days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short-Term Independent Study

Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) allows a student to continue learning asynchronously under the supervision of their regularly assigned teacher when the student is unable to attend school for a limited period of time due to unique circumstances.

How many STIS days may my student utilize in a school year?
Students may utilize a maximum of fifteen (15) short-term independent study days in a school year. These days do not have to be taken consecutively. The minimum contract length is one (1) school day and the maximum is fifteen (15) days.

What reasons qualify for an STIS?
Short-Term Independent study is available for any reason.

Important STIS details you need to know:
A short-term independent study agreement is a legal contract between the parent, teacher, school principal and the student, which all parties must sign. Failure to complete the signatory requirements will nullify the contract, and the student will not have the opportunity to receive attendance credit for the days absent from school. Parent, teacher, and principal signatures will be obtained via an electronic contract. The student will sign a hard copy of the contract.

In order to receive full attendance credit for each day gone via STIS contract, the student must complete ALL assigned work. Should the student fail to complete their assignments, then the student may not receive attendance credit.

How do I set up an STIS for my student?

  1. Please contact the Madrona Front Office via phone, email or in person to request STIS. Although appreciated, notifying your student's teacher of an impending absence does not constitute an official STIS request. Official requests must be made with the Front Office.
  2. We strongly recommend placing your student's STIS request as far in advance as possible. The Front Office staff needs time to process the STIS contract and the teachers need time to pull together the assignment packets. The longer the student's absence, the more time the teacher will need. A minimum of 72 hours notice per five days of absence will help ensure that your student's materials will be made ready before their trip departure, especially if your student will be absent for a three (3) or more day stretch of time.
  3. Emergency short-notice requests of one (1) one or two (2) days may be accommodated and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. The same applies for last-minute STIS needs of a longer duration.
  4. Sign the electronic contract promptly once received via email. It will route to the teacher and principal only after the contract is first signed by the parent or legal guardian who requested the STIS.
  5. If scheduled in advance, students will typically receive an STIS assignment packet from their teacher on the last day prior to their absence.  For short-notice requests, students will typically receive an STIS assignment packet from their teacher on the day they return.  Please contact your child's teacher directly a few days prior to the absence to solidify those details.
